The Championship Cup Series' Atlantic, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeast regions met to compete in the very first race ever held at North Carolina Center for Automotive Research (NCCAR)/NC Bike for a two-day, Twin Sprints weekend of action-packed racing.
Stefano Mesa set the bar high during the first race of the event on Saturday morning in the GTO race, when he ran the fastest lap of the day on his Kawasaki ZX-10R. Mesa's time of 1:22.639 was recorded during lap four of the 25 minute-long GTO race and is reported to be the fastest a bike had been around the two-mile long course to date.
Not to be outdone, Mesa went out again on Sunday and set another lap record of 1:21.899 during the Unlimited Superbike race. Maximiliano Gerardo also beat Mesa's previous fast lap with a record time of 1:22.537 while in hot pursuit on his Miami Motos/Tango Racing Kawasaki ZX-10R.
"The CCS and NC Bike crews did a killer job making the place safe for us as riders," said Mesa, "and making it work throughout the weekend. I was excited to come race here because it's only about 45 minutes from my house, so technically it's my home track now."
"The team did good work (me and dad). We came into the weekend to enjoy and just go fast and we ended up having a bit of competition, so that made it more interesting. But we ended up with all the wins in my classes and we broke the track record two times. I'm extremely happy with the weekend and how CCS handled the task of a new track. I'm excited for the next time we race here, for sure! Oh, and I'm sorry for those who were not here, y'all missed a killer weekend with not one drop of rain!"
The weekend event marked the fourth in a streak of undefeated events for Mesa with another seven wins. His first victory (and only race Saturday) was in the GTO. On Sunday, he won the GTU, Unlimited Supersport, Middleweight Supersport, Unlimited Grand Prix, Unlimited Superbike, and Middleweight Superbike races. Not to be outdone in the middleweight classes, Greg Melka also won seven races on board his pair of Yamaha YZF-R6's. On Saturday, he finished first in the Middleweight Superbike, Middleweight Grand Prix, Middleweight Supersport, and Heavyweight Superbike races. And, on Sunday, he won the Heavyweight Supersport, Middleweight Grand Prix, and Heavyweight Superbike races.
In a three-way tie for most Expert wins, Arthur Diaz also finished first in seven of his races winning the Lightweight Formula 40 and Lightweight Grand Prix on Saturday, then the GTL, Lightweight Formula 40, Lightweight Grand Prix, Unlimmited Classic Combined, and Middleweight Classic Combined races on Sunday. Matt Tara was the winningest Amateur racer of the weekend with six victories. Tara finished first in the Superbike 500 and Superbike 300 races on Saturday, then won the Moto 3, Superbike 300, Supersport 300 and Supersport 500 races on Sunday.
The CCS Atlantic, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeast regions are scheduled to compete next at Daytona International Speedway during the 37th annual Race of Champions event (all regions) October 16-18th, and will include the AMA Sanctioned ASRA Championship Series Presented by Pirelli Tire. The North Carolina Center for Automotive Research (NCCAR and also known as NC Bike) is an independent, non-profit center devised to meet the ever-evolving product research, testing and development demands of the automotive industry. The 620-acre site is home to a two mile, bi-directional road course, a two acre vehicle dynamics area, a seven acre dirt facility, with three miles of dirt trails for trucks or side by sides, and six plus miles of ATV and dirt bike trails.
The two mile long road course is a 40 foot wide, bi-directional serpentine road course with 1/2 mile straightaway, 11 constant radius corners, large grassy run-off shoulders and minimal barriers. Elevation changes range from +10 feet to -5 feet. The Big Loop and back esses of the road course challenge the best of riders in an open track environment with huge grassy shoulders, minimum barriers, and air bags at key locations.
